This is disgusting, what kind of fun night it includes manipulation of the wait staff?
Actual answer: this is sadism, and one of the things I wish was more widely acknowledged is that sadism is really common (if not universal) in people, and that sadism and domination feel *really good.* It probably felt great to play this sort of game with the waitress, to watch her face as she figured out what sort of assholery she would have to put up with for now-$4, to enjoy not only service but the chance to feel rich and powerful and able to force obedience… that’s a powerful high. And it’s part of why it’s so important not to stigmatize harmless ways of getting that high, like debate clubs, sports, and BDSM – because that doesn’t make sadism and domination go away, it just punishes the people who recognize their own pleasure in hurting or dominating others and make sure to channel it into consensual situations. People who don’t know they’re being sadistic tend to interpret it as feeling self-righteous, because surely something that feels so good must have been good, and the person being hurt or controlled must deserve it.

The enemy isn’t someone who says “cruelty feels good.”
It’s someone who says “cruelty feels good so I’m gonna do it all the time/do it to x target group.”
Or someone who says “cruelty doesn’t feel good,” because they’re probably lying, and often the kind of person who does blisteringly horrible stuff while elaborately arguing that it’s fine.
