NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh speaks out against Justin Trudeau’s government using anti worker-back to work legislation against striking Canada Post workers who are on strike trying to improve safety, work-life balance and pay-equity.
All NDP MP’s walked out of Parliament in protest tonight:
I hate to be that person, but like I side with Canada Post Workers, they have every right to be demanding these things… The only issue is, they are making life harder on many people who RELY on Canada Post for their bills, checks, medical, and whatever else. Not only that, it’s very close to Christmas and people order things off the internet, or their mailing things to family and what not for the holidays.
AND THE CHILDREN… They write letters to Santa, and they might just get them at a really stupid time, like after Christmas, or even January. Maybe never even getting them. That’s a bit of a bummer.
Canada Post workers have been demanding a new contract for over a year. This strike didn’t just happen last month. Its been building up since well before last year.
This is on Canada Post. They caused this strike to happen by sitting on their assess and doing nothing for the past 10+ months. If they wanted this strike to have been avoided they could have agreed to CUPW’s very reasonable demands at the beginning of 2018, not at the end of it.
Some things are more important than mail and gifts. People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake here. One of the main thing postal workers are striking for is improved safety, because this job is incredibly dangerous as well as pay-equity for mostly female rural workers.
THAT MEANS THE STRIKE WAS WORKING. It’s on Canada Post to negotiate with the workers in good faith, not the people who just want a safe work environment. This order just means there will be another strike later because the workers still aren’t safe.
because of orders like this, the company knows it can just sit on its ass and do nothing because even when the workers strike, the government will just order them to stop striking.
Also, running rotating strikes means that essential mail is getting delivered, like government cheques (most of which get e-transfered these days anyway, no one sends cheques anymore). Most medication go through private delivery services these days. The only thing really getting disrupted are gifts, cards, and non-essentials. And if you feel those are more important to you than the safety and health of the people who deliver them, you need to get your head checked.
Rotating strikes also means that even those non-essentials are getting delivered, just on a delayed schedule. CUPW deliberately organized the strike to cause maximum disruption and inconvenience to CANADA POST, while minimizing disruption/inconvenience to CONSUMERS.
