Therapist: here is a book recommendation for you, I hope you will like it.

Me: Cool, I’ll give it a read.

Therapist: I hope so, this book helped change my life 🙂

Book: weirdly religious, extremely ableist, says things like “if Hitler had only been able to over come creative art block ww2 would have never happened”

Me, profoundly uncomfortable and not about this life: I started therapy because always having to advocate for myself as a disabled/chronically ill person is exhausting and dehumanizing and I’ve hit critical burnout but god fuck and damn me I’m not about to let this pass…

The book is called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and it’s a whole lot of Yikes.

It also states that attention deficit is a marketing ploy to sell you snake oil for your lack of self discipline. And that between 70 and 80% of people who think they are ill are actually self dramatizing for attention and a reason to justify their inability to be productive, and that doctors are laughing at their patients.

I tried to get past my initial “yikes” reaction to it earlier this week and persist, worried that I was just being overly sensitive, but the more I read the more upset I got until I voiced my concerns with friends and family and they all lost their collective shit too.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
