It baffles and infuriates me that Hogwarts students don’t take Latin or Greek. Accio? Literally “I summon.” Lumos? Fucking “light.” Expelliarmus? Expel weapon!! Ooooh I wonder what Levicorpus does– you Dumb Ass Bastard. You ILLITERATE. It’s called Levicorpus, it lifts someone’s body, it LEVIES your goddamn CORPUS-

Counterpoint: Hogwarts actively discourages students from taking Latin or Greek because if they knew either one every single magic twelve year old would be trying to mash up twenty words and make their own Ultimate Spell instead of using the Good Standardized Spells Known Not To Explode Magic Schools

I have a feeling that last point is aimed at the ravenclaws…

I feel it’s more aimed at slytherins cause we would totally mash up words for “shut the fuck up” and “zip it” and make a hex that literally zips someone’s mouth shut

Levicorpus is strongly implied to have been invented by James and/or Sirius, I’m certain the Marauder’s Map involved some novel spellwork and so did a lot of the Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes products including the ones developed while the twins were still at Hogwarts, and no one but Ginny seems to use her signature Bat Boogey Hex, so I suspect that that might be an original too. Don’t underestimate the Gryffindor drive to show off.

And I wouldn’t rule out Hufflepuff students experimenting with new spells either, for that matter.
