For those of us who are still struggling with the heat (especially at night)

A few things that I’ve picked up from my dad from his travels on how to stay cool without a fan or air-conditioning

  • Hang a damp towel over an open window
  • Keep your blinds and curtains closed at all times
  • Lay a damp towel over your duvet and lie on that (naked or in thin pyjamas) when going to sleep at night
  • Have a cool drink of water before sleep
  • Running cool water over pulse points will help to cool you and reduce sweating. Backs of knees, wrists, under the ears, and the back of the neck are a few good ones
  • Placing a towel or blanket in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes and the placing it on your head or body is great for quickly extracting heat
  • If you want to cool your entire body, then stick your feet in cold water (and no, I don’t know how or why it works, bur it’s a life saver)

If anyone has anything else to add, then please feel free to.

MORE FUCKING NOTES

sleep with wet hair, it helped me a lot

More tips from an Australian who’s lived through multiple 48 degrees celsius rowing camps and HOT summers without an air con or fan:

  • Freeze your socks (it sounds weird, but it really helps to then wear them during the day or at night, similar to the ‘stick your feet in cold water’ except it lasts longer and you don’t get ‘wet’)
  • Freeze those jelly lollies like Haribo Bears, Allens or Trolli lollies in the freezer, suck on them like ice blocks during the day, easy and delicious.
  • Freeze your water bottles and use on the back of your neck if you start overheating, also great to put behind your neck if your in bed. When they melt, doubles as having a lifeline for cold water.
  • Always have back-up damp towels/socks/water bottles in the freezer, you will end up needing them when the others melt. Refill those ones and place them back in the freezer.
  • For anyone that sleeps on their side, keep damp towel or cloth on your pillow against your cheek. Trust me it helps.
  • Have a cold shower before you go to bed, and when you get up.
  • Even if you have a fan or a AC I would still recommend doing these things, the air, even warm, mixed with the damp water instantly helps cool you down.
  • Don’t bother with a blanket. Trust me. Not worth it when you are melting into your bed.

Hope these help some of you ❤
