Why are so many people afraid of bugs?
Needles?
The dark?
Clowns?
What happened in human history that affected such a large portion of the population?
Evolutionary defense system
Bugs carry disease, sharp objects create wounds and get infected, can’t see in the dark and don’t know what things are out there that can kill you, clowns are the other faces of the devil.
In a time where you can’t defend or defeat such thing, only solution was to avoid.
That’s actually a helpful answer, thank you
i want to point out the clown one is still a relevant defensive measure
oh! i can actually answer the clown one for real!!
okay, so, like, humans are STUPID good at telling when people are lying, even if we don’t quite realize what they’re lying about. and the thing with clowns is that you’re supposed to take things in your personality, typically things you don’t like about yourself, and exaggerate them to the point of hilarity
the problem comes in when people choose what kind of persona they want their clown-self to have. If you try to be a happy clown but aren’t a happy person in general, people are gonna pick up on that! Kids in particular are easily affected by things that Don’t Quite Add Up, and the resulting big fat flashing Error sign in their brains when this happy clown isn’t actually happy frightens them.
Probably has something to do with, like, Dangerous Things making themselves look like Harmless Things.
