Lets talk about scars

Tell me. Which of these are top surgery scars on trans men?

The answer is none. Not a single one of them.

The first two are scars from double lung transplant surgery, the third is pectus cavatum (Chest Wall) reconstruction surgery and the last is scarring after gynecomastia.

Lately, I have seen and heard outbreak of stories from trans men that go something like this;

The storyteller has been somewhere where they have needed to be shirtless (like say, swimming pool, sauna, locker room, whatever) and some random person or persons have approached him, proceeding to make comment about their top surgery scars and either hinted or outright told the man in question they know (or think they know) about his trans status.

The approaching person has not necessarily been hostile, actually, I have heard more stories where they come to “show their support” to the storyteller.

I shouldn’t even be telling this to people, but you shouldn’t point out other people’s scars.

No matter if you think they are trans. No matter if you are curious. No matter if you want to show your support. No matter what other excuse you come up with.

You. Just. Don’t. Do. It.

It is rude and shows that you just think you are above normal rules of courtesy.

You show best support for trans people by treating them as any regular people, not by walking to them, pointing out the difference they no doubt feel insecure about already, and claim you support them while simultaneously othering and quite possibly outing them.

And as we see here, it might be that the guy you saw was not trans after all.
