Husband was looking for me all round the house so he could show me something he’d made but he couldn’t find me so he just shouted really loudly, “Fantasy and Sci-fi are the same genre!” and the rational part of my brain doing laundry was like “I’m not responding to a meme, wait where am I going—” as I ascended up the basements stairs like the wrath of god, and he just turned like “there you are” and I’m SO MAD THAT IT WORKED
Lots of local libraries seem to think they still are the same. Any idea on how to change that?
Fam, I did my entire damn thesis on the evolution of fantasy as folklore, and I still had to submit it to a “sci-fi/fantasy panel”. There is no way I have the answer to this.
I think it’s because they’re both within the same scope of speculative fiction? I can’t remember where, but I recall reading something about how so many books can sit in either the fantasy or the sci-fi genre that it would be a disservice to try to separate the genres? Which, trust me, I understand, but what always got me was the combo of fantasy/sci-fi/horror on a lot of book-buying sites.
(Also will be forever confused at the classification of Labyrinth Lost as sci-fi????? When it has very clear legend/mythos undertones? Let me set up a Legends section of the bookstore, god damn it, I can sort this shit so much better.)
